A rose-red city half as old as time

Ruby's blog has a post to vote on the new 7 wonders of the world, a noble cause to obtain the 7 symbols of global unity. I just wanted to post on my favorite of the nominated wonders, the place which I most want to visit, (next to Makkah al-Mukarramah and Mad─źnat al Munawwarah) the red city, the architectural marvel that is Petra. The city carved into the rock, long hidden from the prying eyes of the western world.

Pictured above is the end of the dark and narrow gorge called the Siq, which is the entrance to this wondrous city.

At the end of the narrow gorge stands Petra's most elaborate ruin, the treasury (Al Khazneh), the intricacy and detail that went into the craftsmanship truly amazes me.

Unfortunately the Kaaba isn't nominated as one of the new 7 wonders of the world which I think is quite disappointing, given its historical heritage and ability to bring everyone, be it king or beggar, to the same level. Definitely much more of a wonder than the Statue of Liberty or Eiffel tower, and this coming from someone who hasn't even seen it in reality, well I haven't seen either of these in reality but from the media I have seen them in I know which one is better.

A true symbol of global unity

Till next time in Waseem world

Ancient archaeological findings and all dat mysterious buildings and digsites have always intrigued me.

I think, the older the "natural wonder" is, the higher priority it should be on a list thats not only 7.

The Kaabah should be one of the most visited, so most definitely in the 7 wonders, its only logical.

These days, its all about tourism and attraction as well as westernization :)

Conformity is such a bitch!

This 7 wonders thing seems more of a popularity contest than an actual review of the wonders of the world. The Statue of liberty and Eiffel Tower have no place in the vote.

And for that reason I think the Kaaba should not be included, because as much of a wonder as it is, it has not been given to us to win some popularity contest.

o Petra is very pretty. I like ruins, lends to my imagination very well.I agree with the Kaaba only in so far as it is the great symbolic unifier amongst Muslims from every nation on earth. But equally there are also people who do not like Islam or Muslims who feel offended by it. So I don't think it works in a global context.

hey waseem!

Definitely agree that the Holy Ka'bah should have been on that list but there are probably reasons why they are not - for example someone who does not understand how symbolic it is, would not understand the emotion feel when you see it in reality.

Trust me that emotion overwhelms you, it is the most amazing feeling when you see it in reality..

:)

The pyramids of Giza are quite spectacular.. altho i never got the chance to see the inside:(

Petra is now on mylist of places to see;)

Um..I think it was Haseena who has seen Petra - and she had some awesome pics.

Yeah the Kabaah is truly amazing but I agree with Queen on this one - perhaps not everyone would agree on it being made a wonder of the world (although it most defeinitely is)Plus it would mean all sorts of stuff tht Muslims wouldn't want non muslims going into the city to check certain conditions, wadda, wadda - which is all so unnesceary and wrong.

On another nore _Waseem , yay! you updated:)

amazingly was...you left out one of the most important wonders to vote for (other then makaah)...timbaktu is worth every vote yet sadly is no were in the top 10 especially seeing as tomorrow is final announcements in Lisbon...I voted ages ago and the reason i say timbaktu is that it was at the cross roads of the ancient world. a place were all caravans met and therefore had the worlds leading univeristy...some of the amcient texts can still be found there though alot is needed to be done to restore them...it was the ultimate seat of learning along with Baghdad university and Toledo in Spain...
i can give you a whole history leason but you get the idea...

o and petra is in the top 10 so get everyone voting :D
